I had heard about Palo Duro Canyon and the outdoor musical drama "Texas" some years ago. I had put it on my "To Do" list but never seemed to have the time and be in the panhadle when the play was happening.
This year, we made a point of going. What a treat!
First the canyon. You drive east in an area that is flat and almost treeless. For someone who always wants "cool and green", it was a dreary site. Mostly dry and few houses or trees to break it up. Suddenly, you enter an area that is full of trees, creeks, wildflowers, and interesting scenery.
Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and 800 feet deep. Unlike the Grand Canyon, it has a lot of green-trees, plants, and flowers. We spent a short time walking around it. Very nice.
But the play is what I came for so let's talk about it. You know, when you have planned to do something for a long time, the actual event can be a let down...not live up to your expectations.
"Texas" did not disappoint! The acting, singing, choreography, and story line were a treat. And the special effects were excellent.
This is the story of Texas set in the 1800's in an ampitheater which has the canyon as its stage. And the canyon is used to its fullest. From the rider and horse on the canyon rim to the fire, lightning, and fireworks, it was real entertainment for the whole family.
I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to go on the backstage tour the next night. Not seeing the tour guide at the appointed time and place, I went wandering around looking for help. By chance, I ran into William Anderson, the executive director of the play. Without hesitation, he took us on the tour and spent the better part of an hour showing us around and answering questions.
